Schools Rugby Action at Newlands

Schools Rugby Action at Newlands

16 years ago News

The Schools Day at Newlands, sponsored by Canal Walk, provides young aspired players the unique opportunity to trace the footsteps of their Provincial heroes, as they run out of the Newlands tunnel onto the hallowed turf. It also gives the many schools participating the opportunity to showcase camaraderie, spirit and passion inherent in the derby traditions of school boy rugby.

In order to promote the traditional style of running rugby, there will be no kicking to posts – for either penalties or conversions – with only five points awarded for scoring tries. Former WP stalwarts Toks van der Linde and Chester Williams are lending their support to the day and will be handing over some great prizes to stadium supporters, school groups and outstanding players.

Gates open at 2pm, with the first under 9 matches taking place at 3pm. The main match has been drawn between Bishops and Paarl Gymnasium’s first XV’s and promises to end the evening on a high. All scholars, parents, old boys and rugby enthusiasts are welcome. Entrance is free.

Match Schedule for the day:

15h00: Mini Rugby (under 9)
15h20: Fanie Theron Primary vs Rondebosch Prep (under 13)
15h55: Milnerton High vs Stellenberg High (under 19)
