Promising Youngster Hangs Up His Boots
The tighthead prop, who made his debut for the Vodacom Stormers last year, is a talented youngster who has played for the SA U/19 and U/21 sides.
Following a chronic neck injury that worsened over time, Neil underwent major neck surgery in May last year. The operation was deemed a success and Neil has been recovering and resting since the operation and has been regularly assessed by the neurosurgeon.
However, the young prop has been advised by the neurosurgeon that the risk of playing rugby again is too high, and that the status of his neck is not conducive to playing a contact/collision sport and that he faces a significant injury or disability risk.
“The decision to quit rugby was one of the toughest I have ever had to make. I will miss Province, Newlands, the fans and all that helped to make my tenure here memorable,” said Neil.
“We are very sorry to see a young player of Neil’s calibre retire from rugby, however we understand and support his reasons for doing so and wish him all the best for his future”, added WP Rugby Managing Director Rob Wagner.
