Waratahs deny the DHL Stormers

11 years ago News

The Stormers were at home for the first time since the end of February (for just the second time this season), and after a tough four-match tour in New Zealand and Australia, but they were not able to make home advantage county on the night in front of just over 25,000 fans.

Both teams scored just one try each, in a physical encounter, but the visitors relied heavily on the boots of flyhalf Bernard Foley and fullback Kurtley Beale, who, between them, kicked five penalty goals.

Outside centre Juan de Jongh was a shining light for the DHL Stormers, causing havoc in the midfield and setting up a first-half try for right-wing Kobus van Wyk, but the hosts were unable to keep the scoreboard ticking over in the face of the ‘Tahs’ determined defence.

Flyhalf Peter Grant kicked two penalty goals for the hosts, but those penalties from Foley and Beale were too much in the end for the DHL Stormers, who have a bye next week.

The DHL Stormers’ next game is against the Lions at DHL Newlands on Saturday, April 19.
