Toomua back at Newlands

Toomua is an exciting utility back who performed well in the blue and white hoops of WP. Now he will face his former team-mates in the Vodacom Super 14.

Coach Allister Coetzee quipped that the young Aussie still didn’t return his playbook after his short stint with Province. “Matty has done well when he was here with us. He is a quality flyhalf.

“It’s just a pity he has to play behind Matt Giteau. But this is a different competition to the Currie Cup and obviously our preparation has been completely different. Whether the opposition know what’s coming they’ve still got to stop you.

“For us it’s about executing and making sure we’re accurate this weekend and if we get that right it doesn’t matter who we play against.”

Coetzee expects his team to be as clinical on the defence against the Brumbies as they were against the Waratahs last Saturday. “I think we’ve been v ruthless on defence. The only thing is we coughed up a few too many balls.

“We turned it over too many times which disallowed us to put pressure on the attack of the opposition. We could have scored more tries. We understand that and we’ve worked on that this week, but there’s no doubt in my mind that this side is growing and attack comes with confidence.

“I think there’s enough confidence in this side to get it right. I’m happy with where we are as long as we progress every week. The Super 14 is not a race, it’s a marathon. We’ve got the Brumbies that’s the next challenge for us.”

Coetzee preferred not to talk abou the dangers individuals such as Giteau and Stirling Mortlock pose for the Stormers on the attack. “We don’t focus on individuals in the Brumbies side.

“We’re aware of what certain individuals bring to the team, but we’ve got to stick to our systems. We’ve got a great defensive system which we believe in and that’s what we’ve got to do to the best of our ability and from the word go.

“Against the Waratahs we were a bit asleep in the first 10-12 minutes of the game and we worked slightly out of our system, but the guys got together and sorted that out and then it was all systems go again.”
