DHL Stormers Flashback: Hurricanes blown away
Herschel Jantjies scored a try and set up another as the DHL Stormers kicked off their final Super Rugby season in 2020 with a 27-0 bonus-point win against the Hurricanes at Newlands.
The Capetonians started what would be their final season at the fabled rugby stadium with four unanswered tries in a polished display against the visiting Hurricanes.
The DHL Stormers got on the front foot early, marching into the 22 where they launched a maul before scrumhalf Jantjies put in a clever cross-kick to find an unmarked Sergeal Petersen out wide.
A turnover near halfway from Salmaan Moerat gave them their next attacking opportunity and the forwards took control, with Steven Kitshoff crashing over in the corner.
The third try came as a result of defensive pressure as Jantjies collected a bounced pass and raced away to score.
The DHL Stormers matched their attack with defence to secure a 19-0 half-time lead.
The visitors were shown two yellow cards at the start of the second half, and the DHL Stormers then stretched their lead to 22-0 via a Damian Willemse penalty on the hour mark.
The fourth try came at the death as an intercept in the 22 turned defence into attack and Willemse raced away to score and put the seal on an emphatic performance.
The DHL Stormers won three successive matches, including back-to-back derbies against the Vodacom Bulls and Emirates Lions, before the season was cancelled due to lockdown restrictions.
The four South African teams then exited Super Rugby to join the Vodacom United Rugby Championship, where the core of the DHL Stormers 2020 squad, under the stewardship of Director of Rugby John Dobson, won the inaugural edition of the expanded European competition.
