DHL Stormers claim Newlands bragging rights
The cricketers won the toss and posted an impressive total of 177 in their 20 overs, but a stunning 71 from DHL Stormers extended training squad member Brandon Thomson proved the catalyst for a remarkable chase by the rugby players.
Fast bowler Beuran Hendricks top-scored for the Cobras with 46, and he was supported well by radio personality Ryan O’Connor who made a quickfire 32, but the DHL Stormers bowlers stuck to their task well and managed to limit the damage.
Flyhalf Kurt Coleman was most impressive with ball-in-hand for the DHL Stormers, who played in their brand-new 2016 away jerseys, returning figures of 3/17 in his three overs, and he was backed up by his skipper Louis Schreuder who took 3/19.
The DHL Stormers innings got off to a flying start thanks to an explosive cameo from Jaco Taute who scored 16 off 7 balls before holing out to midwicket.
However, the real fireworks came from Man of the Match Thomson who carved the Cobras bowlers to all corners with some assistance from Jean-Luc du Plessis as they built an impressive partnership.
There were some late scares for the DHL Stormers as Cobras coach and Proteas spin legend Paul Adams got amongst the wickets, with some flamboyant celebrations to get the crowd going as well, but in the end Huw Jones was able to steer the DHL Stormers home to a win over their Newlands neighbours.
