Stormers supporters sleepover at Newlands

Stormers supporters sleepover at Newlands

19 years ago News

On Friday 13 January, 280 “father and son” (and some moms!) teams pitched their tents on the hallowed pitch of Newlands Rugby Stadium, a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Adding to this unique experience, the children had the chance to take part in a coaching clinic with the Vodacom Stormers players, and both adults and the children got to mingle with their heroes after the clinic. Each child received a rugby ball courtesy of Vodacom, and these were quickly filled with autographs as the children posed with their heroes for treasured photographs.

Nando’s was on hand to supply the kids with delicious burger meals, whilst the dads each received a championship boerewors and steak pack to braai courtesy of Shoprite/Checkers. The braais were soon lit, and the delicious smell of boerewors filled the stadium. Whilst parents relaxed and enjoyed their unusual camping surroundings, the children were kept entertained by videos and games.

Die Burger sponsored a kicking competition for the dads, with the prize being R500 cash. Five contestants, selected from a lucky draw, took part with Mark Lansdell coming out the ultimate winner.

Saturday morning everyone was up bright and early for breakfast, after which tents were stowed away and it was time to go home laden with goodie bags filled with gifts and a personalised photo of the sleepover, printed by Oxbow/Xerox.
