The suspension runs from February 23 to March 8, inclusive. He has a right to appeal the sentence.

Vodacom Stormers coach Rassie Erasmus said not having Burger for two weeks would be a “massive setback for the team”.

“He is one of the leading players in the world.”

The Sanzar Judicial Committee, chaired by Jannie Lubbe, found that Burger had acted in a manner contrary to good sportsmanship.

The hearing was convened to consider the citing of Burger, following an incident in which the Citing Commissioner alleged that the player had shown an abusive sign after being yellow carded.

During the hearing, Burger conceded that by showing signs after receiving a yellow card, he acted in breach of the law. He strongly denied abusing Assistant Referee Willie Roos.

In other hearings, Vodacom Bulls No 8 Dewald Potgieter was found guilty of executing a dangerous tackle on an opponent. He has been suspended for one week. His teammate, centre JP Nel, was cleared on a charge of striking an opponent.
