Luke just wants to win

Those were the sentiments expressed by No 8 Luke Watson ahead of what promises to be a huge challenge for the beleaguered Cape franchise.

The Springbok has been in sublime form in a struggling Stormers team this season and he will be looking to deliver another top class performance on Saturday. “I don’t think the captaincy is that big a deal. We have got so amny extraordinary leaders in the side,” he said when asked about the captaincy.

“A guy like AJ Venter is left and we’ve got Willem de Waal, Peter Grant, Bobes (Gcobani Bobo) has also been a leader of various teams. So we’ve got so many leaders in the side that it is not a difficult position to fill and it’s not a big deal.”

The new captain had praise for the coaching staff for the way they stood by him after news reports of comments about the Springbok jersey attributed to him. And he said he was not thinking about a Springbok recall, despite being singled out as the Stormers stand-out player by the critics.

“I have been happy to an extent with my personal form, but I don’t want to harp on that as we are here to talk about the Stormers. There have been one or two trying times, but the coaching staff, with Rassie and the assistant coaches, have been very supportive and have really stuck by me and given me a lot of support during those trying times.

“My highest dream at the moment is that we win on Saturday. That is my dream right now. We’ve got two very important games before the international seaon, so let’s hope we win those two games and we will discuss that in three weeks’ time.”
