Vodacom Stormers stars for charity
South African rugby players have raised a total of R1 375 000.00 for this year’s beneficiaries, with 55 tries scored by players from the Sharks, Vodacom Bulls, Xerox Lions, Vodacom Stormers and Vodacom Central Cheetahs at a value of R25 000 per try.
The Vodacom Stormers lead the try-scoring stakes with 15 tries in their five local games to date.
The team from Cape Town made its most significant contribution to the cause with the eight tries scored in the 56-18 win against the Lions at Newlands, which remains the highest number of tries scored by a South African team in a single Vodacom Super 14 game in South Africa this season.
The Lions are next best with 14 tries from five matches in South Africa. They are followed by the Vodacom Bulls on 13 tries from four games in South Africa, including the seven they scored against the Blues.
The Sharks currently sit on ten tries from their three local matches, with the Vodacom Cheetahs on three tries from their sole game played in South Africa before the overseas leg of their campaign.
This year’s campaign is already well on track towards surpassing the R1.85 million which was topped up by the Vodacom Foundation to R2 million last year. All the funds this year will go towards The Smile Foundation, the Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Centre for Africa, and the Netcare Vodacom Craniofacial & Netcare Vodacom Smiles for You Programme.
