DHL Stormers score for teachers
DHL Stormers’ top try-scorer this season, Dillyn Leyds and teammates Cheslin Kolbe, Seabelo Senatla and Kobus van Wyk visited the Vodacom ICT Centre in Kuilsriver on Friday to find out first-hand what a difference their try-scoring abilities have in the community.
This year’s Vodacom Super Rugby was used as a vehicle to launch the Tries for Teachers initiative which supports teacher training in the country.
The Cape Town-based franchise played their part to contribute to the campaign with the 32 tries they scored throughout the tournament.
For every try scored by a South African team during the 2015 season, Vodacom donated R5,000 towards the campaign.
The DHL Stormers’ tries amounted to a donation of R160,000 to Tries for Teachers which supports Vodacom Foundation’s flagship Mobile Education Programme for teachers to be empowered through access to Information Communication Technology (ICT).
Leyds displayed a serious ability to cross the whitewash with the six tries which he scored this season, while Springbok centre Damian de Allende added four to his side’s total try-tally. The combined effort of the two players contributed R50,000 towards the initiative.
The players along with trainees from the centre were involved in some hands on training with a CISCO technician as they were shown how to assemble and operate computers.
Youth trainees and Centre Management then had a turn to give the players the third degree during a question and answer session.
The Vodacom ICT Centre in Kuilsriver is just one of 61 teacher centres that have been established country wide, which offer teacher development training, youth and community programmes.
Information about the Tries for Teachers campaign: Tries for Teachers supports Vodacom Foundation’s flagship Mobile Education Programme for teachers to be empowered through access to Information Communication Technology (ICT).
The programme offers teacher training and has trained over 20,000 teachers in Maths and Science using technology. Teachers are also trained on how to integrate ICT in the classroom.
Currently, a total of 61 teacher centres have been established country-wide, which offer teacher development training, youth and community programmes.
