On July 18, former President Nelson Mandela’s birthday, people from across the world are urged to devote 67 minutes to a worthwhile cause.

The City has partnered with FoodBank SA to pack food hampers, which will be distributed to communities in need.

City staff will also be contributing non-perishable foods to meet the goal of packing 1,000 boxes with non-perishable staples.

The Podium Hall in the Civic Centre will be a hive of activity between 11h00 to 14h00 on Thursday, Mandela Day, when a number of companies will be filling boxes for FoodBank SA.

Claire Ritchie Baisley, FoodBank SA’s marketing officer, said the Stormers – whose departing winger Bryan Habana is a FoodBank SA patron – would be packing goods from 13h00 to 14h00.

A team of City employees will also be packing food and Manager Achmat Ebrahim has urged staff to donate non-perishable foods.

It costs R100 to fill a hamper with staples like pilchards, samp and maize meal.

Ebrahim said: “I urge you to make use of this wonderful opportunity to contribute to a worthy cause while celebrating the life of Madiba.”

He added that making a donation would make a very real difference in the lives of those who receive the food hampers.

A R100 hamper can feed a family of six for a week. FoodBank SA leads a large-scale programme to establish food banks in vulnerable communities.

FoodBank SA depends on donations from producers, manufactures, retailers, government agencies, individuals and a range of organisations.

The food is packed into boxes and stored in warehouses, from where it is delivered to depots in communities.

Donations can be dropped off at the Podium Hall from Monday, July 15 to Wednesday July 17, during office hours.

FoodBank SA requests donations of the following food items: oil (750ml), yeast, 2.5kg maize meal, 2kg rice, 200gr soya mince, 1kg flour, 425gr tins of pilchards, 1kg samp, 500gr sugar, and 500gr red speckled beans.
