www.thestormers.com: How difficult is it to motivate the guys for the Hurricanes game or is pride the characteristic that will pull the team through on Saturday?
Luke Watson: It is vital to consistently be motivated in everything we do, from the training field to the bus. It is a full time job but the guys are very determined. They know that they have a responsibility to the team and the fans to perform.
Where did it go wrong last Saturday against the Highlanders?
We let ourselves down. There were too many mistakes and we were not clinical enough. While we can’t change the outcome we must learn from the defeat.
You said it was just a matter of time before everything falls into place and you will click as a team. Why hasn’t it happened yet – do you think its a confidence thing?
To an extent it is about confidence. If we can start the game the way we ended against the Highlanders we will be moving in the right direction. We must not fear losing, stick to the game plan, strive for excellence in all areas and enjoy what we do.
Some people say the transition from Currie Cup to Super 14 level prove a bit tough for some of the Currie Cup stars of last year? What is your view on that?
It is a step up. The pace is faster, its more physical and the opposition play different styles of rugby. All of the guys in this squad are capable of holding their own; they just need game time to get used to the level of competition.
The Hurricanes at home – what do you expect from them and how much and which aspects of your game need to improve if you want to come away with a win.
They were not finalist’s last year for nothing. They are currently on top of the log so it is a major challenge for us. We expect them to come at us hard, making use of their pack, which is aggressive and very physical. We are confident we can match them here. They have a dangerous midfield combination and are good at spreading it wide so we will have to be extra tight on defence. We need to secure primary possession and keep the ball in hand through the phases to be successful.
