Refreshed Roos ready to roar for DHL Stormers

Evan Roos is reinvigorated and poised to make a resounding impact as he takes the next step in his remarkable journey with the DHL Stormers.

The dynamic No.8 has been a key member of the DHL Stormers’ quest to back-to-back Vodacom URC finals, a contribution that was rewarded with a Springbok call up where he starred in a win against England at Twickenham last November.

Having packed so much experience into the last 18 months, including the disappointment of missing out on selection to the Bok squad for the 2023 Rugby World Cup, Roos is happy to have enjoyed the pre-season with the DHL Stormers which allowed him to take stock of his career.

“It has been a crazy few months,” Roos said. “Thinking about where I was to where I am now, it seems surreal. A lot has happened very quickly.

“This off-time has given me time to reflect. I’ve had close friends and family around me, which makes it much easier. I really appreciate them. It softens the blow of those highs and lows.

“It’s been a good reset for the new season. I feel refreshed and can’t wait for things to happen this season.”

The DHL Stormers thundered into the Vodacom United Rugby Championship with a hard-fought, bonus-point win against the Emirates Lions in Johannesburg last week.

Having opened up a 27-7 lead at the half-time interval, the DHL Stormers showed their resilience by withstanding a massive comeback attempt from the hosts to score full marks in their season debut.

“We are very happy with the five points. It’s never easy, especially at altitude,” Roos said. “The Emirates Lions never go away. So we are happy that we DHL Stormers boys could show some fight and won it at the end.”

Acknowledging his personal performance, Roos admitted to feeling the customary “butterflies” that flutter before the opening match of a new season.

“There were a bit of nerves, with it being the first game in a while, but I think it went well for myself and the team. I am super happy about the result and really excited about the match up with a quality Scarlets side.”

The DHL Stormers are back in student country this weekend, as a clash against the travelling Scarlets awaits at the Danie Craven Stadium in the first home game of the campaign on Saturday (kick off at 16h00).

Returning to a ground where the DHL Stormers are unbeaten, and where they lifted the South African Shield last season, has Roos eager for action.

“It’s a massive blessing playing at the Danie Craven. I personally enjoy it. It’s a quick field,” he said. “The rugby heritage coupled with it, makes it the ultimate scene to play rugby, especially DHL Stormers or DHL Western Province rugby.

“I can’t wait for it. It’s always a great vibe. I’ve got a few mates who study and stay at Stellenbosch and they always make a good effort to come and support. So we as a team are really excited to play there.”
