Coach delighted by victory under tough conditions

Coach Allister Coetzee after the game said he was very happy with his side’s performance in what were not the most ideal conditions. “It was a good victory for our boys. It wasn’t pretty, but it is the first ever win for the DHL Stormers in Canberra.

“The conditions out there were very difficult; the ball was wet because of the dew. In addition we made five changes to the team, which includes a 20-year old flyhalf making his run-on debut so taking this all into account it was an impressive performance, particularly the way we defended for the full 80 minutes.”

The flyhalf in question was youngster Kurt Coleman, who despite having some shaky moments, impressed the coach on the night.

“I am very pleased with Kurt. He is still very young and this is very much part of his apprenticeship. Along with Johann Sadie and Steven Kitschoff, Kurt is still learning and we are very proud of all of them. He needs to gain experience, but it is great for him to do that in a winning team.”

More firsts are on the horizon next week, when the DHL Stormers play their first game in Melbourne against new franchise the Rebels. He said: “Rebels are a good side. They have a great set piece and will be another tough challenge.

“We have already picked up nine points from our three games on tour and if we can make it 13 or even 14 after the clash in Melbourne we will be delighted.”

On the injury front Andries Bekker suffered a back spasm, but should be fit for the next clash. Dewaldt Duvenage injured his ankle and Coetzee is expecting the results early next week.
